Custom Cue Sticks – Custom Fit For a Better Billiards Game

Those who are serious about their game know that one pool cue stick is not the same as another. This is why custom cue sticks are so very popular. The type of wood, the grain in the wood, the type and shape of the tip, the diameter of the shaft, and the workmanship of the cue all have a radical impact on how the cue performs and its’ effect on the player’s performance. Beyond all of that is the simple fact that not every pool player is the same size. That obvious truth leads to the very obvious truth that not all pool cues should be the same size.

There are several differences and contrary to a beginner’s way of thinking, one cue does not fit all. The most obvious difference that suggests a need for custom cue sticks is simply player size. Not everyone is the same height, nor do they have the same length arms or size hands. The style of play is also a major factor. Some players employ a lot of cue ball spin, others use almost none. Some players use a lot of force, while others rely on finesse. Using a cue that does not suit the style of play can actually have a detrimental effect on one’s overall game and performance.

In order for an experienced player to play her or his best game, the cue used must suit the game style and the techniques employed. For a beginning player, a proper cue can make the difference between learning good habits or bad ones. For these reasons and more, custom cue sticks are very popular with serious players. Some are less expensive than most people might realize, at about twice the cost of a high quality production cue stick. A well made cue stick that is properly cared for can actually last several lifetimes.

Different cue construction and design is vital for different techniques. There are three approved cues in regulated play. Those players may have a break cue, a jump cue and a playing cue. Obviously, the most attention and resources should be dedicated to the playing cue, as it is used for the most shots. One expert recommends that, unless one has unlimited funds, attention should be on the performance of the cue stick rather than on its’ appearance. Many players have fallen onto the trap of buying custom cue sticks based on looks, only to find that that particular cue does not enhance their play.

Sean McGarrity is an avid pool player who enjoys teaching others the sport and is first to suggest that players who express a strong interest in the game should invest in their own custom made pool cue early on.
